When time is of importance and you're on a quick overnight flight, there's nothing more convenient than a hotel located at the airport terminal.
Hilton Gatwick Airport (South Terminal) is advertised as such and this was the main reason it was booked. Nearby hotels offering airport transfers are also a good option as well but the convenience of just walking to a hotel and not waiting on a vehicle or having to call and locate the "pick-up" points are more than enough to justify the stroll to the hotel.
From the Hilton website, it was advertised as
"connected to the Gatwick Airport South Terminal via a covered walkway". This was, in fact, true, except they didn't mention that part of the "covered walkway" was by the pick-up/drop-off point, so it was wide open at both ends.
On a summer day this would be no issue, but in the heart of winter, it certainly wasn't a welcoming surprise.
Apart from that minor inconvenience, we eventually located the hotel (past drop off area, down the elevator and across the real covered walkway). On the inside, you're greeted by a traditional Hilton lobby with no lines and fast, friendly check-in service.
WiFi is free only HHonors members so be sure to sign up when booking online if you're not already a member.
Rooms were spacious, clean and despite it being an older property, everything was in perfect working order nothing seemed worn or outdated. The hotel has a somewhat familiar Hilton atrium layout, so you can have an inside facing room or exterior window. We opted for the latter but ended up with a view of the car park so it's a bit of a gamble.
Guests are also able to select their room choice/s online or via the Hilton app for the "perfect" room location. However, it's worth noting that with early check-ins, the selected room may not be available.
Aside from the Hilton brand, airport convenience, comfortable and spacious rooms; this hotel truly excels for breakfast! With what can only be described as a small resort style buffet spread, this hotel left nothing to the imagination. The traditional English breakfast was complimented with all the extras of cakes, pastries, fresh juices, teas, omelet station, and the list goes on and on. If your upcoming flight doesn't include a meal, not to worry....it won't be missed!
If there's time during your stay be sure to pop back into the terminal and book
a ticket to central London. A round-trip weekend fare direct to London Bridge would be approximately $20 USD.
This certainly is a highly recommended option for an airport hotel in Gatwick and Holiday Travel Network would definitely be staying at this location on any other future London travels.
