Hotel des Colonies ~ Brussels, Belgium

This hotel is a great little affordable alternative to be within close proximity to everything you can possibly need. If you're coming in from the airport there's a direct train from the lower level to Brussels Nord station for just €8.50 one way. From there it's just a 10 min walk to the hotel (or €4 by taxi). The hotel is based on an old building so the modern amenities aren't found at this place. However for the price, it's not a bad deal. You have a very helpful reception staff and basic but good full breakfast (eggs, bacon, ham, cheese, pastries, cereals etc.). The breakfast room is spacious and never crowded. Negatives.....The rooms are small and shower is even smaller. There's a heater in the room which didn't seem to be working. Only 1 (one) available power outlet in the room (located in the bathroom). The only other one we managed to find was behind the dresser, so that involved pulling this forward whenever something else needed charging. One of the biggest issues, the walls are VERY thin.... to the point that you could actually hear the person in the next room snoring at night.

Security is a bit of a strict thing at this hotel although the area didn't seem to be an issue. Your room card is needed to enter the hotel main door, activate the elevator, open the door on your floor and then finally open your room door. Now to the positives.... If you intend to spend time outdoors then this is a great place. Food: they're many options from fast food to fine dining restaurants less then 5 min walk away. Shopping is never ending; the City2 mall is less than 5 min walk away and has pretty much all you you ever need in one location. The main shopping street is right outside the door of City2 and one of the most popular shopping streets in Brussels. Sightseeing: Continue straight along that street and about 25 - 30 min walk from the hotel you'll get to Grand Place, Manekin Pis and other popular sights. Underground metro: Rogier is also just by the City2 and you have excellent connections throughout Brussels. So if you're looking for a great bargain and don't mind the negatives, then this would be a great little option. Other alternatives in the immediate vicinity are Hilton, Sheraton, Thon and Crowne Plaza.
